Club history

As early as 1885 a yacht club existed in Brixham with its headquarters at a malthouse in New Road. It was not, however, until April 26th 1937 that the present club was founded under the presidency of Sir Alec Goodson, who was also Commodore of the Royal Dart Yacht Club and a member of the Royal Yacht Squadron. The premises in Overgang, a converted sail loft, were opened on the 4th June 1938. The distinguished group of founder members were committed to "sailing and fellowship", and throughout its history the Brixham Yacht Club has not only fulfilled their aspirations but has also gained a proud reputation for the warmth of its hospitality and unique "family atmosphere".

The clubhouse

The clubhouse is a prominent white building, enjoying magnificent panoramic views, not only of Torbay, but of the whole of Lyme Bay and the Dorset coastline. The clubhouse stands above its dinghy compound and slipway. The slipway is accessible to dinghies at all states of the tide, but care should be taken at low water. Fresh water is available alongside when the tide permits. The club pontoons are available to members and visitors. In the sailing season there is a waterside marquee for barbeques, receptions and other social events. The marquee also acts as a central focus for championships.   Steps rise up from sea level to the club changing rooms, showers and toilet facilities. From there stairs lead up to the main entrance, bar lounge and Jubilee dining roon. A disabled entrance (together with disabled toilet facilities) is available on this level which has direct access into Overgang.
