Text Box: For the benefit of relative newcomers to BYC or anyone who is mystified by the management structure of the club, here is a brief overview…
Mostly the club is run by three committees:
The Executive - chaired by the Commodore and including the Vice Commodore, Rear Commodore Sailing, Rear Commodore House, Treasurer and Secretary. It’s main responsibilities are policy setting, budgeting and finance, membership applications, and the delegation of duties to the other two committees:
The Sailing Committee - chaired by the Rear Commodore Sailing, assisted by the Sailing Secretary and a small number of elected members. It’s responsibilities cover all matters ‘on the water’, including club yacht racing and dinghy training, special sailing events and open meetings, the club boatswain, rescue and shuttle boats, visitor’s pontoon and storage compound.
Text Box: The House Committee - chaired by the Rear Commodore House, assisted by the House Secretary, the Bar/Catering Manager and a small number of elected members. It’s responsibilities cover all matters relating to the bar, restaurant, clubhouse and social side of the club.
These committees are elected each year at the AGM, although the Flag Officers (they’re the ones with nice titles!) tend to remain in office for a few years to maintain some degree of continuity.
This particular structure has been in place for a couple of years and is proving to be an effective and flexible arrangement, thanks to relatively small committees with clear objectives. It is no coincidence that since we began managing the club in this way, the club’s finances have improved, back to their traditionally strong position.
There is still plenty of work to be done in improving the club, but as somebody must have once said - “we’re getting there”.

So come along and try them whilst sipping your Pimms and admiring the wonderful views from the clubhouse. Who knows, you might even get interested in some sailing, or you can just admire the upholstery!
Text Box: After much deliberation and a few delays, we’ve at last got round to re-upholstering the chairs in the restaurant and bar. Last done about 10 years ago, the frames are still in good condition but local upholsterer Terry Manning has given them a new lease of life, using a fabric which picks out the blue in the club carpet instead of the previText Box: Page #

BRIXHAM REGENERATION

Brixham Harbour, with the Yacht Club centre. Much could change, hopefully for the better, if the regeneration of Brixham and the long-awaited Northern Arm breakwater goes ahead.

If the proposed developments at Oxen Cove and Freshwater Quarry are to proceed, they will undoubtedly affect the club in some way and indeed there are already many rumours circulating about the yacht club re-siting to the Northern Arm.  But let’s face it these are just rumours and so far nothing has been decided.

BYC’s executive are closely involved with the regeneration programme and some of our members are  also involved in the running of Brixham 21. To find out more about the regeneration, and in particular how it could affect BYC, come along to the Thursday evening talk on 4th November by Jon Andrewes, chairman of B21 and BYC member.

Although this is an informal talk, it will give you the chance to hear about, discuss and question what could be some exciting prospects for BYC’s future.

Following on from previous years successful Thursday evening talks, this winter’s programme started on Thursday 14th October with a fascinating and amusing presentation by former BYC Commodore Chris Bedford on Cruising in the Baltic.

Organised this year by Malcolm Cooke and Peter Brown, we again have an interesting and highly varied programme, usually in the club bar, starting at 8.00pm but with bar snacks available from 7.00pm and the restaurant open as usual. So don’t go into hibernation for the winter - come and join us each Thursday evening.

OCTOBER 28 - Richard Standford on the Lyme Bay Reef Project

NOVEMBER 4 - Jon Andrewes on BYC and Brixham’s Regeneration

NOVEMBER 11 - Bob Scull on Sailability

NOVEMBER 18 - Andrew Woodbridge of Westaway Sails

NOVEMBER 25 - Blakes Paints - learn all about painting boats!
