Text Box: Its been an interesting, largely successful and usually entertaining season on the water. There has been a vast improvement in the setting of courses, for which thanks must go to those intrepid helpers on the Point (more volunteers always welcome). In general we have had good turnouts and only lost four or five races through either too much or too little wind. Without doubt the most successful overall performance came from ’Excellent’ (X99) who won virtually everything they entered except for the Exe Bell race which was taken by Peanut (Impala).
As for some of the more memorable (or forgettable?) moments, here’s a small selection, with absolutely no apologies to those whom it may embarrass….
Nemesis, which had a spectacularly disastrous Michelmores race by first T-boning Firefox at the windward mark, crewman Dan Pedrick losing his mobile phone overboard, the anchor fouling during kedging and having to be cut loose, then the propeller becoming fouled on the way back to harbour. But at least Commodore Terry Phillips won the wooden spoon for all his heroic efforts!
Apiano, whose crew were worryingly convincing as a group of singing nuns in the eve of regatta pursuit race, but nevertheless well deserved winners. And just why is a yacht called A piano?
Sigmania, which is breaking all club records in the number of lady crew members and giving rise(!) to a whole new innuendo-led sailing vocabulary. But they’re all just jealous really, Richard.

….and a sad farewell to Jan Collins

Having served the club well (quite often literally)  over the last 5 years, Jan Collins  has sadly taken the decision to retire from her position as Bar and Catering Manager, with effect from the end of the year. She will be greatly missed and difficult to replace, but we wish her well in the future and hope to see her frequently on the ‘easier’ side of the bar. Thank you Jan, for all you have done for the club.

If anyone is interested in the job or knows anyone who may be, please contact Ron Campion or any member of the House Committee as soon as possible.

BUT EVEN BEFORE THE ABOVE , COME AND HAVE YOUR SAY……..

On Thursday 21st October at 7.30pm in the bar, all sailors are invited to the annual ‘wash-up’ meeting to discuss this season’s racing and how we can improve and rejuvenate the sport in the coming season. There’s also been talk about forming a cruising or rallying section, so do come and join in. (If this newsletter arrives after the event, please still make your views known in the club)

An enthusiastic  sailor since he was 12, Terry has raced dinghies most of his life, and is both a senior RYA sailing instructor and Yacht master. Professionally, he is a Divisional Paramedic Training Officer, having worked in the paramedic service for about 33 years. A keen racing yachtsman, he can usually be found near the front of the fleet in his yacht ‘Nemesis’, a Laser 28, and he will undoubtedly need a bigger trophy cabinet after his considerable success this season. Most would agree that as well as being a fine commodore, he is a great ambassador for our sport.

Terry Phillips, Commodore of BYC

In each issue we would like to feature one or two club characters, so who better to start with than the commodore.

Terry, 57, moved to Brixham in 1990,  has been a BYC member since ’91, and commodore for the last two years.
