Text Box: Members Yachts - “Regard of Brixham”, owners: Chris & Marie Bedford
Built by Uphams of Brixham in1933 as a ‘Trawler Yacht’ and originally named “Our Boy” after Stewart Upham, Regard is 54ft on deck and 75ft overall and is constructed of pitch pine on grown oak. She was bought by former BYC commodore Chris and his wife Marie in 1999 after which followed two years hard work refitting her, ably assisted by club members Peter Brown, John Thorpe, Guy Haigh and Dan Pedrick. The refit created a more contemporary feel, in order to suit more her new role as a charter vessel under MCA code two for small commercial vessels.
Back in the 1930’s Regard made her first voyage to South Africa where her owner is said to have had an eye for alluvial diamonds - of course he said that he was fishing for Sneok! Perhaps his alibi had run a little threadbare when, in 1935, he made a dramatic run from Table Bay to Penzance in 65 days, leaving his wife and son to return by steamer. That son went on to be the first Englishman to sail around the world single-handed.
In 1939 she was purchased by Lord Stanley of Alderly. Stanley believed that the Chamberlain Government was about to cave in to the demands of Hitler’s Germany and he wanted a boat which could go anywhere, without remark, from which he could start a resistance movement from amongst, ‘The more robust spirits that still existed in England and France’.
After the war she was sold by Lord Stanley and she enjoyed a series of owners before being purchased by Dick Young and renamed Regard in 1954. Dick’s family were brought up on the boat and now live in New Zealand, but remain in touch with the present owners. Dick sold the vessel to Michael Text Box: The BYC Website by Tim Corbett
The Brixham Yacht Club web site has now been active in its current form since April 2004. The site was created in order to provide an alternative source of information for club members and also for use by the general public and other sailing organisations.
The site has also been designed with the facility for club officers to “upload” information to ‘their’ areas of interest. It is hoped that this feature will enable the very latest information to be available on the site, thus assisting members in planning their sailing and social calendars.
There is also a great deal of other information about the club and its facilities available on the site and links to many other useful web sites.
Photographs will be added to the site whenever possible and any suitable images can be mailed to Tim Corbett for inclusion on the site.
However the web site needs feedback from the users to enable ongoing improvements to be made, so I hope that club members will assist by offering suggestions and ideas on how things could be changed. As the designer and developer I would also appreciate comments and ideas from those more technically expert than I. Please contact me using the form on the site ‘contacts’ page with your suggestions.
