| Encouraging Start for Mainsheet The first issue of Mainsheet seems to have been well received - my thanks to everyone who has responded with comments and messages of support. This has encouraged us to produce this second issue quite soon after the first, thus saving postage costs by including it with the subscription renewals. It’s a pleasure to have received a number of articles and suggestions for articles from members; this is exactly what we need - a newsletter written largely by the members, covering diverse topics whilst remaining relevant to the club and its members. Please keep them coming! As editor I should emphasise that my role is one of coordination and production. Inevitably I will write some of the articles and I will try to keep such articles as impartial and balanced as possible but I must stress that any views that I express may not necessarily be those of the club or its management. And here is such a view… The Yacht Club’s position as an important part of Brixham’s sporting, social and maritime community has again been amply demonstrated recently - witness the success of such events as the Fishermens Mission supper, the Vigilance Sea Shanty evening and numerous other charitable and private functions. All were non-BYC events but supported by the club, held at the club, with substantial benefit to the club. I am sure many would agree that such inclusiveness rather than exclusiveness helps to make BYC special. Further inclusiveness is being made on the sailing scene, with the development of the ‘Progressive Personal Handicap’ system. Much like a club golfer and Tiger Woods could have a decent game by each playing off their individual handicaps, the PPH is aimed at giving less experienced crews, slower yachts or cruising yachtsmen a chance to join in easily and compete fairly with the more racy yachts. Both BYC and SDCRA are adopting such systems for the 2005 season - see reports from both on pages 3 & 4. Alan Haynes, Editor |
| Commodore’s Seasonal Message As I write this greeting I am looking forward to the many social and sailing events that have been organised for the coming year at BYC and at the same time reflecting back over the past year. The sailing events were well organised and great fun to participate in, both round the cans in the bay and further afield during our weekends away. A full programme of social events ran throughout the year, ending with our splendid New Years Eve Party. The club has grown from strength to strength with robust management, a keen sailing section and strong social element and all looks good for the 2005 season. Brixham Yacht Club has a wonderful family and supportive culture, which we must treasure and build upon. We face some difficult decisions on how the club will develop in future years and by sharing our thoughts and ideas I am sure the right path will be chosen. Sadly we have lost a number of club members during 2004; my thoughts are with their families at this festive time of year. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all flag officers, committee members, BYC staff and all our members a safe, peaceful New Year and every happiness for 2005 Terry Phillips, Commodore |
