BYC AND THE   REGENERATION OF BRIXHAM

The Thursday evening talk on 4 November was presented by BYC member and  chairman of Brixham  21, Jon Andrewes.

Speaking to a full house, Jon first gave a brief overview of the concept plans, the ongoing consultation and negotiations with various government bodies. This was followed by a lively discussion on the future of BYC in any major harbour regeneration project.

We are still only in the very early stages but it is already obvious that there is much strong feeling about BYC’s unique and spectacular location, its waterfront access and its independence as freeholder of the club site.

It was also recognised that we are in a strong position to influence the harbour development and there are some exciting opportunities for the club if we want to grasp them.

If the whole regeneration project goes ahead, and lets face it this could take decades, the big question for BYC is just how big a part it wants to play.

Text Box: AN EVEN BETTER PLACE TO BE
by Tom Savage
More improvements to Club premises are planned following a recent decision of the Executive Committee that will make BYC a nicer and safer place to visit.
A major re-wiring has just been completed and this will be followed, before Christmas we hope, by the resurfacing of all three car parks. With such limited space available it is important that the car parks are used properly and Members are reminded that they are only for their use when using Club facilities and then not for periods exceeding 12 hours.
The entrance lobby will be given a long overdue makeover early in the New Year once a damp problem to the external wall has been dealt with. The intention is to make the area appear uncluttered and welcoming. First impressions count!
The Committee Room is to be redecorated with new lighting and curtains to make it a more attractive place for holding small meetings of up to 20 people. The cost of these works will come from a bequest made last year and in recognition of this the room will be named “The Holman Room”.
And finally for now, the air extraction system for the bar area is to be updated which will create a more pleasant environment as well as making savings in electricity costs.
If you have any suggestions how the Club might be further improved please let any Committee Member know.

HELP! If you can help the Club by spending a few hours a couple of times a year carrying out small decorating/repair jobs please leave your name and contact number behind the Bar or ring Tom Savage (07976 525 227).We hope to build up a small team that will save the Club a little money and give you the chance to make new friends and do a useful job for BYC.

Ralph joined Brixham Yacht Club in 1973. Over the years he has served the club as a committee member, Rear Commodore House and for two periods as Commodore. He has been a race officer for many years and still fulfils that role.

He recently retired from his own printing business and was appointed Admiral of BYC in 2002 in appreciation of his services to the club.
