‘THE POINT’ TEAM DINNER - by Ralph Bowles

The racing marks are in the bosun’s compound, the locks of the point hut have been winterised and the Point teams have had their end of season dinner - it all means one thing, racing for 2004 is over.

Nine intrepid point team members together with their ladies, held their dinner in the Jubilee Room and thanks to the sailing fraternity who very generously held a collection to pay for the wine, a sizeable number of bottles enabled the evening to go with a swing - thankyou sailors!

On behalf of myself and Brian Palmer I welcomed the guests - commodore Terry Phillips, whose wife Flick unfortunately could not be with us, Rear Commodore Sailing Tom Savage and his wife Paula, and past team members Frank Bowles, Ken Slater and Gerald Bending together with their wives. It was nice too to have Jim North, “A” team gunner and Marian with us, looking well after his operation earlier in the year.

We all enjoyed an excellent meal thanks to Dennis and all the club staff. The point teams would like to express their thanks to BYC for recognising their efforts during the sailing season and to wish everyone “Happy Sailing in 2005”

New Format for BYC Racing

The 2005 season will see new arrangements for club racing designed to attract bigger fleets and to give those who have not raced before the opportunity to develop racing skills without having to obtain formal, and some say costly, handicap certificates.

Those who still wish to race under IRC certificates will be divided into two fleets with promotion and relegation between the divisions taking place at the end of each series. For the remaining boats a progressive personal handicap will be allocated provisionally and amended at the end of each series according to performance.

We know there are a number of yachts wanting to adopt this format and look forward to there being a substantial “Corinthian” fleet.

SITUATION  VACANT!

ASSISTANT RACE OFFICERS REQUIRED

(NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY)

The Race Officers who administer racing from The Point at Battery Grounds are looking for people to join their teams on Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings.

Anyone interested in having a go please contact the Sailing Secretary, Matt Dodd.

STORAGE OF ENGINES & DINGHIES

As in previous years, yacht tenders can be stored in the bosun’s compound and dinghies in the large compound. Overall there is a shortage of spaces and allocations will be made on a first come first served basis.

Details of charges are being included with the subscription renewal; in addition in future a charge will be made for storing outboard motors in the bosun’s shed. A break-in earlier in the year has demonstrated that we must have better control over the storage of engines and the bosun will in future have details of every engine stored.

Any dinghies, engines and tenders not displaying a current sticker by 1 March 2005 will be removed and may be offered for sale in due course.

Finally - a number of you with dinghies in the large compound have been concerned that from time to time they have been temporarily removed to allow functions etc to take place in the compound. You will be advised at the beginning of the year when this might happen and your dinghy is accepted for storage on this understanding.
