MEMBERS’ YACHTS

‘Opus Too’, a Corribee 21 owned by Victoria & Dominic March, who spent their honeymoon on board in June 2003. This year as a wedding anniversary present they bought the charts for Scilly and in late July set off on a five week cruise  to those lovely isles.

Brixham Junior Sailing Club Ltd has had another fine season on land and sea. Two dozen youngsters learned to sail dinghies. Monday evening races were held for both junior members and adult dinghy sailing members (maybe the Millennium Cup could be contested on 1978 Wayfarers?)

We rely heavily on BYC for club facilities including use of the compound and changing rooms. Thanks to contributions from the Paul Dyke and Neville Barker funds. Special mention to Mike Elleston who has wrested £5000 from charity funds plus a recent award of £7000 to buy six new Pico dinghies. Great news for Brixham kids and the future of sailing…

A theft from the caravan set us back by over £120 but the losses were quickly replaced and no sailing days lost. The caravan has been replaced with a smart secure new steel container in the compound, bought exclusively with Junior club money and will be kitted out in the spring as a storage facility.

We have fulfilled our 2002 ambitions to put in much-needed capital investment. We still need long term income and are always looking for volunteers who want to invest in youth sailing. Please call me if you can offer any type of help. Steve Linley-Shaw, 01803 859303

Virtually identical to Ellen MacArthur’s Corribee Iduna in which she circumnavigated Britain in 1995, Opus Too is one of the smallest yachts at BYC but like her owners she’s big in spirit and adventure. For the full story of their voyage come along to their talk on Thursday 24 February 2005.

SDCRA Offshore Week 2004 by Tim Whitehead

The South Devon Cruiser Racing Association (SDCRA) is an association concerned only with racing cruiser yachts from the Torbay and South Devon area and is largely supported by Brixham Yacht Club, Royal Torbay and Royal Dart YC.

The annual Offshore Week is not the usual racing ‘around the cans’ but a week of friendly passage racing to the Channel Islands and Brittany on cruising or racing yachts equipped with appropriate safety gear (IRC category 3); essentially using the yachts for the true purpose for which they were designed.

This year’s route was about 290nm with a schedule of seven races over eight days, starting in Torbay on Friday 11 June, via Guernsey and  north Brittany to Lezardrieux, Trebeurden, Perros Guirec and Treguier, back to Guernsey and finally Torbay on Saturday 19 June. Some 18 boats took part (that’s almost 100 people) from Plymouth, Salcombe, Teignmouth and Torbay including six yachts from BYC.

The week was blessed with some of the most glorious weather of the summer, mostly good sailing conditions including a superb overnight passage to Guernsey for the first race, and excellent racing and comradeship throughout the fleet. The interesting tidal passages and varied conditions led to a wide spread of placings among the individual race results but overall BYC yachts did extremely well.

Les Playle’s ‘Papillon 2’ won IRC class 1, John Thorpe’s ‘Firefox’ IRC class 2 and Alan Haynes ‘Nikita’ the PY class. Firefox claimed victory for the best overall performance.

On the social side, among the many highlights were the beach rounders match at Perros Guirec, won by the team which cheated the most and the now traditional sink the pontoon party hosted by ‘Wavetrain’ (John Brummer) and ‘Mighty Quin’ (Mac Jones).

In 2005 the week should be even better with St Malo, Binic and Paimpol on the agenda and the new Progressive Personal Handicap system aimed at encouraging more yachts to join in this challenging but fun event. If you are interested please contact Tim Whitehead on 01803 858022 or www.talk21.com.
