Commodore’s message. It was an honour to take over as your Commodore at the AGM in April, and I look forward to working with the members, staff and committees in the future. My thanks go to Malcolm Cooke as the retiring Commodore - his is certainly a hard act to follow, and he has been a great inspiration during my period as his vice commodore. In BYC terms I am a fairly new member; I have only lived in Brixham for 14 years and a member of the Club for most of that time, so I am the first to admit that I am still learning about the history, traditions and members of the Club. My aim will be to oversee improvements and developments to the Club wherever possible, whilst not attempting to fix things that aren't broken. Some changes are always necessary, but I will try to be sympathetic to the nature of your Club, and listen to the members. To be more specific, I am a keen yachtsman, both cruising and racing, so I do get involved with both the sporting and social aspects of the Club, and I would like to see more integration between the two; I believe that we need to encourage younger people to join and participate in the future of the Club; I would like to see further improvements in our communications with the members and the local community; and using our fabulous location, friendly atmosphere, excellent clubhouse and facilities I want to develop further our reputation as one of the country's premier yacht clubs. We have a challenging time ahead of us, especially with the imminent development of the fishmarket and Oxen Cove. There is much work to be done and we should never forget that the majority of that work is done by volunteers - whether they be flag officers, committee members or members. Without such commitment and effort your club would not be what it is today - 70 years old and going strong! Alan Haynes
