News from Brixham Junior sailing club

Steve Linley-Shaw reports on an excellent season so far – except for too much or too little wind each Monday! Nevertheless 25 intrepid youngsters turn up every week to be met by the instructors (including new hands Peter Marshall, Chris Coote & Mark Dodd) who put them through their paces & nurture an enthusiasm for sailing. Steve is pleased that they will shortly be named as an RYA Approved Training Centre & he is hoping to get more local schools to see sailing as a viable part of the outdoor & adventurous curriculum that they can offer their children. Fund raising is being channeled towards the purchase of their own RIB & a Spanish Night is planned for Oct 13th. Tickets will shortly be available behind the bar. They are also on the look out for a video player if anyone has one that they could donate.

SKIPPERS & CREW DINNER

This is an event that seems to have dwindled in popularity in recent years but this year we want to resurrect it with a bang. Matt Dodd would love to hear from you with some ideas for how we can make it more popular. You can contact him at the club most Thursdays or by e.mail at

m_doddy@lineone.net. Go on… do it today!

MUMFORD’S TORBAY SPRING REGATTA

This took place in May. It is a joint enterprise involving Royal Torbay & Brixham Yacht Clubs & 43 boats took part in 6 different classes.  Brixham did well with Xcellent winning the IRC1 class & Fearnought winning IRC2.

TALL SHIPS VISIT 14th—22nd AUGUST 2007

After the success of last year we are pleased to be welcoming Stavros S Niarchos & Prince     William once again this summer. They are      identical ships 200 ft long & are owned & run by the Tall Ships Youth Trust., a charity that develops youth through crewing tall ships. Whilst in Brixham the ships will be open to the public (adults £3 children free) & match    racing—involving 24 local Torbay youngsters—will take place on  August 18th & 19th. Whilst not racing the crews will be training, socialising &  parading around Brixham. The ships will be berthing alongside the  northern Fish Quay & superb views can be gained from our club bar so why not call in for a drink & a look!
