   MAINSHEET

RESULTS

"Novelty" competition

1st Yacht, "Andanche"; Richard Butlin, Malcolm Cooke & John Thorpe - due largely to huge bribery of Commodore and age/long membership of crew.

2nd Yacht, 1st Dinghy, Wayfarer Mike Innes, due to young age of crew, and creeping, through always saluting Commodore

Special prize "Ragdoll"; Anna Figg & crew - due to excellence in dressing yacht and themselves, for flying Union Flag above the Scottish Flag, but in need of navigational aids due to tendency to wander off into the distance out of control.

Special prize "Simply Red"; Chris Coote & crew - superb backwards boat handling at first, but disappeared into the east

Sailing competition

1st Yacht  "Apiano" - completed every leg in the lead.

1st Dinghy  Grey Pico (Adam) - after handicap, but he sailed the whole course near-perfect

Special prize "Fearnought" Matt & Michelle Dodd & crew - for stubborness in attempting sailing backwards, then perfection at it once they got going

Combined achievement

Yacht "Silver Mistral", Richard Cox & Crew, for having the only combined boat (a motor-sailer) and doing most of the course twice. Also for flying a fine set of battle flags, all upside down, and doing a 400 year old valve radio check.

Dinghy Yellow Pico, excellence in seamanship and a healthy bribe.

Victor Ludorum

Double Trouble, John Hawkins, Tim Corbett & crew, for making it all possible by setting the buoys and monitoring everything. Thanks also to Peter Brown and Leigh Passmore on safety boats.

Special thanks to Committee boat crew - Rikki as race officer, Barrie & Kim Jones and Jan H for all their help as scrutineers and judging panel, staff and volunteers of BYC for all their help with the cocktails and BBQ.

…. And the bribes? They raised a grand total of £92 for BJSC.

Text Box: All the fun of the Le Mans Start!

BYC 70th Anniversary Commodore’s Special Race

Saturday 23rd June 2007

This “fun” event was well attended with a good number of yachts, dinghys (and a motor sailer) all taking part on a humid Saturday afternoon. The sailing instructions were put together by Alan Haynes when he was in a particularly fiendish mood & involved all the participants in the following:

1. A “Le Mans style start from the bar to tenders

2. Get to the start line by any means possible.

3. A downwind leg that had to be sailed backwards.

4. A beam wind leg where no sails or engines could be used.

5. A final windward leg under sail (or auxilliary power) that incorporated precisely 2 tacks & 3 gybes & passing between 2 bouys but with no use of a rudder.

It did, indeed, prove to be tricky, to say the least, but all craft eventually completed the course, although there were those who did question whether all the rules were actually complied with! All competitors had also been warned about the possibility of getting wet near the end & how right this proved to be as one almighty rain shower soaked all near the end. We still can’t work out how Alan arranged that! However, it didn’t dissolve any enthusiasm & all retired to the Club afterwards for cocktails & the opportunity to recount their adventures.
